Judy’s House in Harwich Port

I just visited a friend in HarwichPort who is not a professional decorator but definitely should be! Her choice of fabrics,art work and little details amount to a very warm,beautiful and welcoming home. She tends to find fabrics at Zimman’s and is constantly looking for items on sale-I love her creativity and old Yankee ingenuity. She has a great eye for putting it all together. She also is lucky enough to have inherited many beautiful pieces of furniture and artwork and has used them perfectly as well.

Final Touches at Woodstone

We are moving in next week!! This is the fun time-seeing all of the lights we have picked out over the last year ,the fixtures,the wallpapers and paint colors,the knobs,the mantle details,the column(exterior) details,cabinetry and so on.The floors are all done now-first floor just needs two more coats next weekend and then good to go!

Mid-October at Woodstone

Landscaping going on-planting trees and shrubs,grass seed going in-trucks are everywhere!

The barn is basically finished!

Millwork is being partially stored in the kitchen. They are now putting in millwork on the first floor.

Early October at Woodstone

Lots going on at the barn and at the house.The barn trim is getting painted Agate Gray by Pratt and Lambert (just like the house) and the doors Ben Moore Essex Green. Lights are all installed in the Barn,and my office is basically finished-we are moving there this week to wait out the move into the house in November. The interior windows looking into the rest of the barn are really cool!

In the house, the tiling and grout are done in all of the bathrooms. Trim is going up on the second floor and they are about to start the first floor. The painters are right behind them. My wonderful wallpaper guy begins in two weeks. The third floor game room is all finished and ready for action!

Woodstone in June

Lots going on at the house and the barn-that is for sure! Inside the house the plumbing and electrical have all been installed, inspected and now the insulation is going in. We are using closed cell foam insulation that has a higher R value, will give the house a smaller carbon footprint and is the best insulation you can use right now.

What a mess when they are finished spraying!

On the exterior, lots going on as well. The septic field has been finished to the north of the house. In the front of the house they are digging to create the space to put the drainage pipes from the gutters for the rainwater to drain into the field. They are also starting to build the stone wall which will be on the south and west side of the house,as well as a stone wall around an area north of the house. In addition, they are creating a veneer with stones around the base of the barn.

The inside of the barn is moving quickly- we have now finished the wood shop and the garden shed and are working on my office.

The trim is going up on the house and the barn. When that is finished, the barn will be shingled in red cedar and the house will have clapboards that are pre-painted in Agate Gray 2213 (very soft off-white) by Pratt and Lambert. We are waiting for the windows to come for the barn as well. All windows on barn and house are also Agate Gray. The windows on the house came to us pre-painted by Little Harbor in Berwick, Maine. They also made the doors which are already painted in Ben Moore Essex Green.

The apple trees that we moved last summer…only one has made it. A real bummer-was a very tough winter for them. We did put in 7 new ones too-they are doing great!

The Building of Woodstone Farm

So many decisions when building a house.We met all winter and spring this year with the architects,landscape architect,builder….one thing we were sure of was that we wanted a house that looked like it had always been there. In our case, a federal style farmhouse seemed to be the right thing. One day we drove around Lincoln MA looking at houses and styles off architecture-doorways,windows,moldings,trim work. These are pictures from that excursion.

One of the greatest moments of summer for me is to take my rental bike on our annual anniversary trip to Martha’s Vineyard and just ride around Edgartown and look at the houses,gardens and incredible views….Obama was there on the island as well but it really did not affect the traffic or us tourists!

In the Canton of Graubunden,where Klosters is, it is common to name your house and paint it on one of the sides. These are some examples of this-they can be beautiful!

Ralph Waldo Emerson House

“Bush,” the house of Ralph Waldo Emerson in Concord MA is across the street from the Concord Museum, a ten-minute walk east of Monument Square.

Built in 1829 as a summer house by the Coolidge family, the house was bought by Emerson as a family residence in July 1835.

The house was a center for meetings of Emerson and his friends, and still contains original furniture and Emerson’s memorabilia.

It was here that Emerson wrote his famous essays “The American Scholar” and “Self Reliance,” here that he entertained Bronson and Louisa May Alcott, his aunt Mary Moody Emerson, Margaret Fuller, Henry David Thoreau, and many others.

On July 24, 1872, the house caught fire and was heavily damaged. Luckily there was no serious injury, all of the Emersons escaped, and Emerson’s papers were not lost.

Without consulting Emerson, his neighbors took up a collection to pay for repairs. This allowed Emerson to journey to Europe and to Egypt—as he had always dreamed of doing—while repairs were being made. In 1873 the Emersons returned to live in the house, surprised by a town-wide celebration of the event.

Ralph Waldo Emerson died here in 1882.
